Why Dentures Must Always Remain Moist
After getting your dentures, you will have a few new habits to work on. First, of course, you will need to learn how to wear them. Many denture wearers can speak of the experiences they had in learning how to wear dentures.
You may have to learn how to speak and chew food while wearing your dentures. But stick to it, and you’ll soon get the hang of it.
Another thing you will need to learn is the proper way to care for your dentures. One thing that is of the utmost importance is keeping your dentures moist at all times. Doing this is important for a few reasons.
Keeping Your Dentures Moist Helps Them Fit Properly
As you are aware, the soft, pliable part of the dentures that fits up against your gum is shaped to fit the contours of your gumline exactly. If this soft part dries out, it can end up changing its shape due to shrinking and other distortion.
Dentures that do not fit properly can create all kinds of problems for you, not the least of which is sores on your gum and palate. To prevent this, make sure that your dentures are always stored in water or a solution intended for denture storage. This will help keep that soft part moist, which in turn will help preserve its shape.
Moist Dentures Will Be More Durable
Another thing to remember is that your dentures might end up drying out and cracking if you don’t keep them moist. The “teeth” of the dentures will not change all that much, but the soft part can develop small cracks if it gets too dry. This can lead to places where bacteria and food particles collect, causing halitosis problems.
