Foods to Avoid While Adjusting to New Dentures

Adjusting to new dentures takes time. Whether you had all of your teeth surgically removed and have dentures right away, or if you’ve had missing teeth for quite some time and are just now getting dentures, it will take time to get used to wearing them.

During your healing period and as you are getting accustomed to your new prosthetic teeth, there are some things you can do to make the transition a little easier.

Adjusting to Dentures

The first thing we like to remind our patients is that you need to be patient with yourself as you learn how to eat, talk, sleep and chew again with your new dentures. Once you are home and ready to try to eat for the first time, take a look at your plate. Make sure that the foods you are going to eat are soft and easy to chew at first. This will keep your gums from getting even more sore as they are getting used to the pressure of your dentures.

Avoid foods that are hard, like nuts, for at least a few days as you’re adjusting. Sticky foods and foods that are tough to chew like steak, candies or any tough meats should also be avoided until you are completely healed.

You may notice an increase in your saliva flow at first, this is normal. You also may notice that your cheeks and jaw feel sore or tender, this is because the muscles in your mouth and face are becoming accustomed to the prosthetics and they are relearning how to do everything.
