Are Crowns Able to Be Whitened?

Crowns are a great way to fix broken and decayed teeth. However, since they aren’t composed of the same type of material as your teeth are, it will make the whitening process a bit more complicated. Instead, they’re made from some type of porcelain that we’ll make sure matches your natural tooth color.

Of course, over time your natural teeth may grow yellow or become stained leaving your crown looking whiter than your other teeth. The good news here is that the material your crown was made from will remain the same color throughout your lifetime.

Whitening Your Teeth When You Have a Crown

The American Dental Association (ADA) reports that the whitening treatments that are available today won’t affect your crown’s color. These treatments consist of polishes and pastes that are available either from your local drugstore or in our office. However, you should know that you can’t bleach a crown.

As previously stated, your crown will simply remain the same color that it was when we placed it in your mouth. You may notice that the teeth surrounding your crown will grow yellow or become stained though. When this happens to your natural teeth, you’ll want to whiten them so that they will more closely match the color of your crowns.
