Locator Overdenture

Locator Overdenture at Legato Dental Centre
Your teeth play many important roles in your mouth. They allow you to bite, chew, speak, and smile confidently. When you lose your teeth, all of these functions are affected. So, too, is your quality of life. Replacing your missing teeth is essential. Dentures have long been the traditional solution for replacing missing teeth. While they can restore many of the functions of your mouth, they have many disadvantages. At Legato Dental Centre, we can provide stability for your dentures with locator overdentures.

Issues with Traditional Dentures

Dentures have been around for hundreds of years. Over the years, they have undergone many changes, designed to improve their appearance and their functionality. They are still a very popular treatment today. Despite being popular, they still have several disadvantages. These include:
•  Slipping out of place on the gums or falling out of place completely, which can lead to some embarrassing situations.
•  Rubbing gum tissue, which can cause painful sores.
•  Needing to be changed every few years to accommodate your changing jaw.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a modern solution for replacing missing teeth. This treatment uses small titanium posts, which are surgically placed into the jawbone. As you heal from the procedure, your jawbone fuses to the posts in a process called osseointegration. This process stabilizes the posts in your jaw, which enables them to provide secure support for your replacement teeth.

Dental implants are an incredibly versatile treatment. They can replace an individual tooth, several consecutive missing teeth, or even an entire arch of teeth. There are options available to replace teeth without the need for a bone graft. There are even implants that are used to stabilize dentures, including a locator overdenture.

What is a Locator Overdenture?

A locator overdenture is a treatment that uses dental implants to provide stability for your denture, called an overdenture. This treatment is common for stabilizing a lower denture, where the risk of slipping around or falling out is greater. Your overdenture is similar to a traditional denture, consisting of acrylic resin or porcelain teeth that are set into a gum colored acrylic base. The base is designed to snap into place on the dental implants that are placed in your jaw. The implants have locator abutments placed on them, which are button-like fixtures that secure your denture in place. Locator attachments are available in different sizes, which allows us to create a tighter or looser fit depending upon your needs. For instance, older patients with less manual dexterity may require looser fittings, which enables them to more easily remove their overdentures for nightly cleaning.

Benefits of Locator Overdentures

There are many benefits that come with locator overdentures.
•  Your dentures are provided with incredible stability. You do not have to worry about your false teeth shifting around in your mouth or falling out. You can eat, speak, and smile more confidently.
•  You require less surgery. With a typical implant supported denture, you require 6 to 8 implant posts. With a locator overdenture, your teeth may be supported on as few as 2 to 4 posts. Fewer posts mean less surgery.
•  Less surgery means a reduced recovery time.
•  Locator overdentures are typically more affordable than a regular implant supported denture.

With a locator overdenture, we can help to improve the stability of your replacement teeth, allowing you to bite, chew, speak, and smile without fear of your teeth falling out.
